The success of the new Megazoom cameras lead to a farther advancing of the concept and to equip a small housing with no less than 18x optical zoom. The resolution of 8 Megapixels suffices easily for printing small to large prints. Although the immense popularity of the Megazoom is enough proof that they have the right to exist next to the entry level digital SLR, the Megazoom encounters some problems to reach the same level as far as image quality is concerned. You can't get around the fact that concessions have to be made and that the noise that comes with high ISO settings due to the amount of pixels on the small images sensor is one of these negative results.
Panasonic Lumix Memory support
The Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ18 is standard delivered with 27MB internal memory. It may be clear that this is certainly not enough to get going with the camera. A standard JPEG picture is approximately 3.5MB so for one week you can take a picture every day before the memory is full. Maybe an inappropriate comment but isn't it time to enhance the internal memory extensively? Considering approximately 100 pictures, the advice would be to obtain a flash memory card with at least 512MB, but preferably 2 or 4GB storage capacity. The Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ18 supports the SD and SDHC memory cards which opens the door to use 32GB (expected in 2008) storage capacity.

The Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ18 pleased me tremendously and although there is room for improvement of some features, the Panasonic FZ18 offers high quality photography. When you learn to cope with the minus points, which is not so difficult with a MEGA O.I.S. at your disposal, you will experience a versatile camera that lets you as a beginning or advanced photographer work effortlessly with it. The Panasonic Lumix FZ18 is a so-called all-in-one camera with user-friendliness and all-round features of high quality. A fine alternative for a DSLR camera and for those wanting to become more skilled in photography a good stepping stone to the more serious business, a digital SLR camera.
