The Wireless Source, through its Charitable Recycling arm, introduced a cost-free mobile phone recycling service and data removal tool for consumers. "Privacy and identity theft are relevant security concerns for mobile phone users looking to retire their mobile handsets" said Bob Sullivan, CEO of the Wireless Source. "Many consumers want to recycle or donate their retired handsets, but want the peace of mind knowing their personal data will be safely removed before it is recycled."

Sullivan further said, "The consumer has the choice to remove their own data by following the simple instructions on the web site and then recycle their phones or they can recycle their phone by mailing them to us using prepaid mailing labels an we'll do it for them." The Wireless Source will also make a donation to any of the featured charities listed on the web site for each phone sent in to be recycled.

Mobile phone recycling - Wireless communications
As cell phones have increased in popularity, the average life of a cell phone is now approximately 18 months. As people upgrade more frequently, it creates a stockpile of unused handsets sitting idle in glove boxes and desk drawers. It is estimated that there are more than 500 million cellular phones stockpiled in the United Stated alone. These phones if donated can be a terrific resource to someone who would not otherwise be able to afford wireless communications. Alternatively, non-usable handsets will be properly recycled to minimize any environmental threat.
