The Sony Ericsson Xperia X1 cell phone is quite long and narrow, although also somewhat thick, mainly caused by the sideways sliding QWERTY keyboard. The touchscreen is of reasonable size, however, somewhat on the narrow side, and below the screen some additional buttons are found to answer or end a call, as well as the panel button, arrow buttons and a confirmation button. The front of the Sony Ericsson X1 cell phone is made of metal, just like the back cover, which gives the cell phone a solid appearance. Standard included with the Sony Ericsson Experia are a battery charger, a data cable, a headset, two stylus pens, several manuals per functionality and a software CD.

The clear touchscreen with high resolution (800x480 pixels) ensures easy operation. The touch screen responds fast and you don’t have to press hard on it in order to make it work. The colours are beautiful and watching a video is not a problem at all. Personally, I find the monitor rather narrow, certainly when using it vertically, since in that case the resolution changes from 640x480 to 800x480 pixels. It’s also advisable to use the included stylus pen sitting on the left top side, since the icons are a tad too small to operate with your finger. Although in some cases it is possible. There is a small upright edge around the monitor which makes it difficult to click on an icon in the corners using your fingers. Other than that, no comments.

The internal memory of the Sony Ericsson Xperia mobile phone only contains 400MB. The phone memory can be expanded by means of a microSD/SDHC memory card. This is quite striking; before, Sony Ericsson always used its own Memory Stick (M2). Support of microSD offers a better compatibility whilst most other mobile phones are also using this type of memory slot. The Sony-Ericsson Xperia handset supports memory cards up to 32GB. The flash memory card can be inserted and removed without having to turn off the mobile phone, since it is found on the side and not underneath the battery. Removing the memory card is not always easy, due to the upright edge where the memory card is placed. The 3.6V 1500 Lithium Polymer battery, included with the Sony Ericsson X1, is able to offer a maximum standby time of 833 hours and a talk-time of 10 hours according to the specifications. During testing, this came down to two days of use with a couple of calls a day, Internet surfing and listening to music. The standby time is reasonable. For those who travel a lot and will use the phone as navigation system, a second battery or car charger might come in handy.

The Sony Ericsson Xperia phone is an extremely enhanced handset with a neat design. Thanks to Windows Mobile as operating system, the use of Office files and synchronizing with the personal computer is not a problem at all. The new panel interface of Sony Ericsson certainly adds to the user’s ease. The full QWERTY keyboard is nicely designed and works well, although the keys don’t have a clear tactile feedback. Sind the large touch screen is slightly higher than usual, the screen also appears to be somewhat narrower.
