Sony expects to shake up the camcorder industry with the introduction of its 2008 line of DVD Handycam camcorders featuring hybrid and hybrid-plus movie recording. “People have been drawn to the DVD category because they are so easy to use,” said Kelly Davis, director of camcorder marketing at Sony Electronics. “Our 2008 line offers greater convenience through multiple recording options so you don’t have to worry about running out of media or missing a moment.” All 2008 DVD models include a new built-in zoom microphone. When you zoom in on a subject, the audio also zooms in for clearer sound recordings. The DCR-DVD810 model also delivers Dolby Digital 5.1-channel surround sound that delivers a life-like experience.

The new Sony DCR-DVD910 camcorder will be available in March for about $650.

Sony DCR-HC62 and DCR-HC52 miniDV camcorders

Sony is introducing two mini DV Handycam models with feature sets that provide great value for the investment. The new DCR-HC62 camcorder integrates a 25x optical Carl Zeiss Vario-Tessar zoom lens and a 1-megapixel CCD imager provides excellent video, as well as 1-megapixel digital still photos. For easy framing and viewing of footage, the model is equipped with a 2.7-inch wide (16:9) LCD touch panel screen. It has a Memory Stick PRO Duo media for easy management of photos, as well as a USB port for transferring video to a compatible PC and other devices.

Sony hard disk camcorders

Sony is debuting four hard drive Handycam camcorders with sleek bodies and robust capacities to capture life’s longer moments. Generally, most of the models are more compact than last year’s models. The 60GB DCR-SR220 and DCR-SR85 camcorders deliver continuous recording times (LP mode) of up to 41 hours, while the 40GB DCR-SR65 and 30GB DCR-SR45 models provide up to 27 and 20 hours, respectively.

Sony high definition camcorders

As the leader in the high-definition camcorder category, Sony is further expanding the industry with the introduction of six new HD models. The HDR-SR12, HDR-SR11 and HDR-SR10 hard drive camcorders, along with the HDR-UX20 and HDR-UX10 DVD models, are all based on AVCHD technology and feature full 1920 x 1080 high-definition recording for outstanding clarity and detail. They deliver the highest HD resolution available without sacrificing recording times. All of them feature a new high-profile encoding system to optimize encoding efficiency. And, because they are based on the industry-standard MPEG-4 AVC/H.264 video codec, they are entering the market compatible with many third-party editing suites.
